Traditional Amish-Style Doughnuts

From the Amish Community Cookbook

In honor of National Doughnut Day (and one of our favorite holidays at Fox Chapel Publishing), we are whipping up these Amish-Style Doughnuts. Fox Chapel Publishing is located in the heart of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Lancaster is well-known for its Amish Community. So today we are paying homage to our roots! Celebrate with us and make your own.

You will need:

  • 2 packages of yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 6 cups flour

For the Glaze:

  • 1 pound powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon cream1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • Hot water

Instructions:

Dissolve yeast in warm water and set aside. Scald milk. When cool, mix with beaten eggs, salt, sugar, and yeast. Add flour and butter to make a soft dough. Let rise in a warm place until double in size. In the meantime, mix glaze ingredients together. Add enough hot water to make a thin glaze; set aside. Roll out the dough and cut into doughnuts. Let rise again until light and puffy. Fry in hot oil (365°F). Dip in glaze while warm. Add your own flair with sprinkles, chocolate chips, fruit, etc!
