The art of paper marbling traces back to the 12th century. Today, the art form takes on new breath as the next generation takes it to an accelerated level. Artist Heather RJ Fletcher is helping to grow this movement.
An artist, entrepreneur, and teacher at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts and Textile Center Minnesota, respectively, Fletcher has seen the art of paper marbling grow in recent years, but resources, such as books, have not. “All the books written about marbling are out of print,” she says.
“Traditional crafts do not live on unless they are passed on. This is my contribution to keeping the art of marbling alive.” ~ Heather RJ Fletcher
Fletcher took it upon herself to write the next book on paper marbling. As a result, Making Marbled Paper: Paint Techniques & Patterns for Classic & Modern Marbleizing on Paper & Silk launches this October 2019 from Fox Chapel Publishing.
Fletcher’s book will teach the techniques of paper marbling while offering 30 different patterns you can create at home or in the studio. She also teaches how to float paint on water, create intricate patterns with unusual tools, and so many more marbling methods that can be re-imagined for home décor, stationery, apparel, ceramics, and accessories.
“What I create captures the human spirit of where the culture is heading. Understanding experience creates story, connection and memory.” ~ Heather RJ Fletcher
Educational, inspiring, and thorough, Making Marbled Paper includes the following:
- Over 30 marbling patterns to create, each design colorful and intricate, with clear how-to photos
- 6 marbling projects show how to transfer your marbled designs on a variety of materials for home décor, stationery, textiles, and other possibilities
- Step-by-step instructions for the four foundational patterns to encourage practice of marbling methods
- Multiple techniques for stone, getgel, nonpareil, and chevron designs and their advanced variations
- Expert advice on workspace, tools, equipment, mixtures, paints, papers, and other essentials
- The history of the ancient art of marbling paint from one of 20 marbling masters in the world, author Heather Fletcher
