Lancaster, PA — Woodcarving Illustrated (WCI), the magazine by Fox Chapel Publishing, celebrates its 100th issue. This special issue celebrates the carving community—its creativity, welcoming nature, and opportunities for engagement no matter where you live or how long you’ve been carving.
In developing the list of carvers to feature in this issue, the Woodcarving Illustrated Magazine editorial team sought makers who have either created something with a lasting impact on the woodcarving community or who are transcending their craft in unique and memorable ways.
“Woodcarvers are some of the funniest, most big-hearted people on the planet, and we have continued to thrive for 25 years because of their dedication to this artform,” says magazine editor Kaylee Schofield.
The 100th issue also features fun fall-friendly projects, plus 100 of the best tips from the last 100 issues of the magazine. These range from power carving, caricature carving, chip carving, and relief to painting, tool hacks, and safety tips for the workshop. The issue also features a carved “quilt,” created by readers of the magazine. The magazine team sent out a call for readers to complete and mail in 4″ square blocks for inclusion in a commemorative work that appears in this issue along with information on each carver and piece. Readers sent in relief carvings, chip carvings, pyrography, caricature, power carvings, and a host of different woods and colors.
Also of note, the issue features Jim Hiser, current president of the Caricature Carvers of America, who teaches readers how to transform a simple egg blank into hundreds of different facial expressions. South-Africa-based spoon carver Saskia de Jager is also included and shows how to make a beautiful nature-inspired scoop out of hardwood in just seven steps. And Nikki Reese, author of Carve a World of Gnomes, is at it again with a cute but grumpy monster to make just in time for Halloween.
“Our team takes pride in creating engaging and educational content for the woodcarving community,” Fox Chapel Publishing president David Miller says. “Celebrating a print magazine’s 100th issue is no easy feat in today’s digital world, but because of our talented staff, contributors, artists, and readers, this achievement is a natural progression of the magazine’s rich history. We are incredibly devoted toward our goal within the community to continue creating lifelong woodcarving enthusiasts and new readers alike.”
The magazine hits newstands on August 16, 2022.
