My Story
Bob Gilsdorf is a third-generation woodworker. When Bob Gilsdorf turned 10 years old, he told his parents that what he wanted for his birthday was to build something. His woodworking father designed a gravity-powered go-kart and presented Bob with the pieces: a pile of wood, four wheels, and a salvaged steering wheel. According to Bob, it was “the ultimate gift.” Fascinated by projects that could be both built and played with, Bob’s love of toymaking only grew deeper after he became a father himself. In addition to woodworking, Bob is active in the Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, and Young Life organizations. He lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Bob’s toys can be found in the pages of Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts Magazine. Some of his toys are of the simple kinetic origins, that can be found in his books, Making Inventive Wooden Toys or Zany Wooden Toys Reloaded.

One of the best parts of making toys with kids is that every project turns out perfect. I build a birdhouse with my four-year-old son and let him draw the shape for each side and roof. There wasn’t a straight line or 90-degree angle anywhere, but my son said that it was exactly the way he wanted it. – Bob Gilsdorf
